Lively and colorful, the "Glazed Earth" has all the virtues to be the guest of honor of the Tupiniers. Constantly reinvented, it goes through territories and ages since antiquity. Popular and universal, it invites to share, to eat, to drink, to party.

Thus, for this 34th edition of the Tupiniers du Vieux Lyon, we invite you to discover or rediscover, to love and joyfully celebrate the vitality of this technique which has been in use for several thousand years.

Just out of the studio, the "Glazed Earth" finds its place at the table, for the daily meal as for a large banquet. Sometimes, depending on the inspiration of its creator, freed from any utilitarian function, it becomes surprising or amusing sculpture. Surprisingly, she knows how to style majestic ridge roofs, cover them with shimmering glazed tiles, collect and evacuate rainwater through its gutters and colored downspouts. The "Glazed Earth" is multiple, expressive and generous, as are the potters who practice it.

During these two days, throughout the market, as well as through the exhibition of the Lazarists' Courtyard dedicated entirely to the guest of honor of the edition, we also invite you to meet 140 exceptional ceramists, discover their demanding and passionate work and the diversity of techniques and materials used.

This year again, the formula now famous at our event applies perfectly: "You who dream or better seek to build a better world, take a first step, come and take a sample in the alleys of our market."

We look forward to seeing you again for this new edition of our event. It will make you discover the many facets of contemporary ceramics with the secret hope that, seduced, you will leave with an object, a creation, small part of this land that we all share ...

Exploring new complicities, new materials, attempting alliances that at first sight might seem impossible. Many ceramists have sought to push limits of their creation by inventing new artworks associating dirt with other materials from fabric, basketry and embroidery worlds.

In 2014, the House of Ceramics from Pays de Dieulefit made a call to invite ceramists to create pieces in association with artists or craftsmen of the fabric world. This call has generated great enthusiasm, and resulted in an exhibition in the summer of 2015 of about fifteen duo installations. This exhibition was presented afterwards at the Musée de Gap, at Saint-Chamond Arte Diem as part of the Biennale du Design in 2017, and at the initiative of Nathalie Pouzet at the priory of Salaize-sur-Sanne in February 2018. Previously some others ceramists had taken these paths where soil and fiber marry. They have created pieces of art in which their know-how as pair creators and the power of their materials reveal themselves.

Wood firing had been the only way to fire clay from the Neolithic age up to19th century’s industrial revolution, when other fuels like carbon and later gas and electricity appeared. Wood firing has persisted through the ages and continents. Today this technique is used by demanding and passionate ceramists. Walking in the steps of the early 20th century’s visionary English potter Bernard Leach, they meet Chinese, Japanese and Korean ceramics. They discover the plans of anagama, noborigama and huge dragon kilns. Wood firing aliments the specialists’ exchanges about updraft kilns, downdraft kilns, firing in saggars or in direct contact with the flames. It permits all effects – glazed ware, salt glazes and engobes.

In France, wood firing kilns were used in all regions of ceramic tradition, such as Dieulefit in Drôme, Soufflenheim in Alsace, or in the royal manufacture of Sèvres. They have been mostly replaced by gas or electric kilns, which are easier to use and faster to fire. But there are places whose wood firing tradition has never been abandoned and where it still seduces contemporary ceramists – like in La Borne, village in the department of Cher, our guest of honour this year.

For this immersion in the magic of wood firing we propose in the Lazarists’ yard:

A huge exhibition of contemporary works of the potters of La Borne and of the wood firing ceramists from all over France who expose at our market

A program of short and middle-length films about the epic of wood firings

An exhibition of photographs of Camille Dampierre which were taken during the Great Firing in La Borne in autumn 2016

A model of the kiln of the pottery ROBIN in Poët-Laval (Drôme), which was realized in collaboration with the ceramic center Maison de la céramique de Dieulefit

Photographs of wood firings in the pottery des Chals (Roussillon – Isère), with the kind authorization of the museum Musée Dauphinois in Grenoble.

In our event’s corner in front of the Lazarists’ yard, six ceramists will present their works – Eric Astoul, Michel Cohen, François Gallissaires, Fred Garcia, Pascal Geoffroy and Jean-Raoul Guenassia.

From 1986 on, 140 potters from all over France and abroad exhibit place Saint Jean and the surrounding streets on one of the most important potters’ markets in France. A huge range of ceramics is to discover in the magnificent site of Old Lyon around its cathedral.

The event

Korean ceramics is the honoured guest of this year’s edition. In the context of the crossed years France-Korea we will have the pleasure to receive a delegation of ten potters of the Gyeongsangbuk-do Ceramist Association. Two Living National Treasures figure amongst the members of this association. We will present an exhibition of 50 of their masterpieces in the courtyard of the Lazarists school. You can admire the variety of contemporary Korean ceramics between tradition and modernity for the first time in Lyon.

In order to immerse you in the Korean artistic culture, there will be projections of films about the ceramic arts of Korea in the Lazarists’ courtyard. In the entrance of that yard, there will furthermore be an exhibition of bojaghi, beautifully coloured tissues for traditional wrapping of ceramics. Salmunori percussionists will stroll on the market and within the exhibition during those two days.

This exceptional event is accompanied by a partnership with the Lyon art gallery Galerie 28 which exhibits 30 ceramics of four of our Korean guests from 7 to 11 September 2016.

The market’s guests

Five ceramic guests will be put forward in the event’s corner of our market in front of the entrance to the Lazarists’ courtyard. They are either of Korean origin or strongly influenced by Korean ceramic tradition.

In the Lazaristes’ school courtyard, among the exhibited works of the festival’s featured ceramicists, five poets came to read poetic pieces that they had written for the occasion, in front of a delighted audience.

Outside the courtyard, the market showcased five ceramicists in particular, whose work was mainly inspired by the dialogue between words and clay.

A dozen people took part in a writing workshop after a visit of the exhibition.

In the alleys of the market, the visitors left notes in the suggestion boxes of the Croix-Rousse town crier. Their messages were recited later on by the town crier, during loud and spectacular public announcements.

On Saturday evening, the "Syndicat des poètes qui vont mourir un jour" presented a poetic performance at La Maison des Passages.

The festival ended with a tombola, giving away two of the exhibited pieces made by the guest ceramic artists.

On Place Saint-Jean, just outside the Lazaristes’ school courtyard, a large stand featured more than 500 pieces made by current students or alumni of the school. The pieces were presented in the Lazaristes’ school courtyard and were submitted to two competitions, one awarded by a jury presided over by Guy Darmet, artistic director of the Dance Biennial, and the other one awarded by the public following a vote that brought together more than 5,000 visitors.

The Dance Biennial is one of the two festivals organized in Lyon, alternating with the Biennial Festival of Contemporary Art. Created in 1984, the Dance Biennial has one simple goal: to abolish stylistic and geographical borders, in order to bring today’s dances, in all forms possible, to as many people as possible.

For its 1996 edition dedicated to Brazil, a parade was added to the Biennial Dance Festival as a nod the Rio Carnival. On its very first edition, it brought together more than 2,000 participants and nearly 200,000 spectators. Since then, the parade has been renewed every year on a different theme, working with numerous associations from Lyon and its surroundings, and becoming one of the festival's signature events.
