For its 24th edition, the Tupiniers du Vieux-Lyon Festival introduced a new format by adding a thematic ceramics event to the already famous potters' market. To inaugurate this brand new program, this year’s focus was all about clay musical instruments, a beautiful combination that dates back to the dawn of humanity!
In front of the Lazaristes’ school courtyard, seven ceramicists who have specialized in ceramic musical instruments exhibited their work: percussion instruments (udu, drums), wind instruments (flute, ocarina) and keyboards (ceramophone).
In the courtyard, a stage was set up to host five live bands who played clay instruments. Among them, students from the percussion class of the Lyon Regional Conservatory played pieces that were specially composed for this event by their teacher Jean Luc Rimey-Meille. The concert also featured the "Ocarina Ensemble of Budrio", a dynamic band of Italian musicians, based in the birthplace of the 19th-century, modern European ocarina.
This “first” edition was greatly appreciated by the public!

The Lyon Regional Conservatory provides vocal, instrumental, dance and theatrical training to more than 2,500 students. It offers more than 40 artistic courses. Two types of schooling are possible: a traditional program that happens after school, or a special schedule that has been integrated to regular school hours, from age 8 to 18 (www.conservatoire-yon.fr)
Its percussion teacher, Jean-Luc Rimey-Meille, was the main coordinator of this partnership.
The list of exhibitors at the market
A new selection procedure was introduced this year: a selection committee composed of ceramic professionals, artists from other disciplines, gallery curators and art collectors was put in place to choose the next exhibitors, allowing the selected potters to exhibit their work at the market for three years in a row, with a one-third renewal every year.
